Kaapvaal Craton Data Centre

Introduction

In 1996, a major interdisciplinary, multi-institutional project was started to investigate the origin and evolution of the Kaapvaal craton.  The central goal of this project is to produce a tomographic image of the deep lithospheric roots of this craton, using teleseismics and an array of 82 stations using 50 portable broadband seismometers over a 2-year period.  The instruments were operational between April 1997 and April 1999.  In addition a more detailed teleseismic array was in operation for several months around Kimberley to image a deep region around well-studied and mined kimberlite intrusions.  The data is now in various stages of analysis at different institutions.  The major institutional players in this project are Carnegie Institution, Washington, MIT, Cambridge, and a number of South African counterparts, focussed primarily through UCT's CIGCES, the BPI Geophysics at the University of Witwatersrand, and the kimberlite research group at the University of Cape Town.

A large number of crustal and mantle geology, geochemistry and geophysical projects are linked to this project.  Training and educational opportunities for South African students, especially those from previously disadvantaged backgrounds is built into this program.
