CIGCES carries out research in various fields of Earth Science and uses intelligent graphical computing and spacial analysis, such as GIS (Geographic Information Systems), to study Earth Evolution and Resources.

The Centre provides a forum for students of different national, cultural and academic backgrounds to develop skills in creative use of information and visualisation technology and to integrate their to help better understand how the Earth works.

The academic program at the CIGCES is linked to a wide range of basic research projects within an applications-oriented environment; we aim to combine our scientific measurements and observations into visual end-products.

Computers and computation are the common denominator in pursue of multidisciplinary mergers of previously separate scientific domains, particularly within the natural sciences.

Special attention is also paid to social and economic needs, especially in Africa

Throughout this, we are discovering and cultivating a new set of shared intellectual and practical concerns of the complexities within natural and social systems.

Funding to establish the Centre was initially provided by a donation from the South African Mining and Exploration Industry and the University of Cape Town in 1990.

Operational costs are covered by South African government research grants through the National Research Foundation (NRF) and through THRIP (Technology and Human Resources for Industry Programme).

Contractural and consulting work for the mineral exploration industry covers some of the salaries of CIGCES researchers.
