DEAF CHILD CENTRE SCHOOL

The Deaf Child Centre offers a pre-school and Grade One education to profoundly deaf children, who use Sign Language as their primary mode of communication. The Deaf Child Centre School, based at Mary Kihn School in Observatory, aims to facilitate the development of the learner's communication through creative and school-readiness activities presented in a natural, holistic way.

Three classes are currently running at the school which cater for deaf children between 3-4 years (Grade 00), 4-5 years (Grade 0) and 6-7 years (Grade 1). A teacher as well as a deaf assistant is dedicated to each class.

The Deaf Child Centre Classes were thrilled to receive R167 000 from the Rotary Clubs of Sea Point and New Brunswick, USA, with a matching grant from Rotary International. While the school receives an annual budget from the Education Department, outside funding is critical to keep the doors of the school open. The staff at the school are extremely dedicated and with this enormous donation have transformed the school into the most incredible facility. The money has been used for indoor furniture, equipment, a television, a video machine, literacy videos, outdoor play and garden equipment, ducational games, posters, books, puzzles, and office equipment including a computer and fax machine. The school recently held a function at their Observatory premises to thank their sponsors.
