DEAF CHILD CENTRE MISSION
STATEMENT
The mission of the Deaf Child Centre is to enable permanently hearing impaired children to
reach their optimal developmental potential by providing the best care within available
resources. The service would provide appropriate holistic, multidisciplinary intervention
and rehabilitation within a district health system and in accordance with the proposed
language and educational policy of the new Government.
The parameters of the service activity are:
To provide a
comprehensive assessment of speech and language and cognitive
functions in the hearing impaired disabled child
To provide
developmental, psychological and social assessment and intervention
To promote
the involvement of deaf professionals, related to these services, and
other deaf adults in the multidisciplinary team
To develop
appropriate assessment materials for the deaf and hard of hearing
child and adolescent
To provide
relevant support, information and counselling to children and families
To link
families with appropriate health and social service facilities and with all
available Deaf schools and services in the Western Cape
To provide
parental guidance and educational programmes regarding the
management of the hearing impaired child
To adopt a
bilingual, bicultural approach towards language teaching, using both
signed and spoken language
To provide
support and training for speech and language therapists and other
health workers concerned with hearing impaired children
To liase
with local, regional and national health workers and organisations
providing a service to hearing impaired children
To foster
research related to hearing impairment
To advocate
for hearing impaired at all levels of representation
