THE TOY LIBRARY SERVICE:
The Toy Library provides pre-school children with intellectual and physical disabilities the opportunity for stimulation and education through play. Weekly playgroup sessions are held at the Child Health Unit, at no charge to the parents. Volunteers assist with the facilitation of these sessions. Our members include children with Down's syndrome and Cerebral Palsy for whom specific toys are selected to provide stimulation and education. The children come from various areas of the Western Cape including, Elsiesrivier, Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha. The Toy Library also functions as a support group for the parents, who share ideas, experiences and feelings about their children.

THE DIRECTORY OF SERVICES:
This is a reference guide containing the names, addresses and contact numbers of a wide range of services (including health, welfare and educational services) in the Western Cape for children with special needs. It is intended for those working with these children, as well as for the families who require support.

In accordance with its aim of supporting the information needs of health workers in maternal and child health, MCHIRC is proud to support the publication of this, the ninth edition of a directory that has become a unique and valued source of information within the child health sector.

The Western Cape directory is updated on a regular basis and will become available electronically. This useful resource book is also planned for other provinces in South Africa. For copies of the 1998 edition, contact the CCIC.
