Message of Goodwill The University of Cape Town’s School of Dance, incorporated into the South African College of Music, is one of the most prestigious tertiary institutions dedicated to the study of Dance in South Africa (SA). It holds the distinction of one of the first dance institutes in the world to be attached to a university, having been founded by Dulcie Howes in 1934. We are celebrating our 75th anniversary in 2009. From modest beginnings in the 1930s as the locale for classical ballet, UCT School of Dance has since taken many bold strides and in the late 1990s was accredited with an academic degree status for its Dance programmes. It is today a multi–disciplinary Dance school that has actively responded to the social milieu in South Africa. Over the past 74 years it has produced internationally renown Dance advocates in the fields of performance, choreography, teaching, choreology and research. Under my leadership it will continue to challenge restrictive barriers to the art of dance for all and promote the diverse study of Dance. The UCT School of Dance, recognizes your contribution to cultural transformation through the arts and therefore, I am inviting you to submit a brief message ( of no more than 150 words) before the 3 June 2009 to gerard.samuel@uct.ac.za for publication. It would be my honour to share your message of goodwill with fellow guests during the 75th year anniversary celebrations. Yours sincerely Gerard M.
