Retired as the first incumbent of the Second Chair in Anaesthesia and Deputy Head of the Department (1993 - 2003).
Remained an active member of the department in a part-time capacity.

Educated at St George's Grammer School, Cape Town and undergraduate training at UCT.
Trained in Anaesthesia in London at the Woolwich Memorial-, Charing Cross- and St. Thomas' - Hospitals.
Spent most of his professional career in the USA in Cleveland, Ohio and Los Angeles, California; retiring as Chief of Anaesthesia at the University of Southern California University Hospital.
Accepted the Second Chair in Anaesthesia at UCT in 1993.

Had an interest in Cardiac anaesthesia and in the management of chronic pain.

Claim to Fame

  • Anaesthetist for the early coronary revascularisation procedures performed in the USA.
  • Low and closed flow anaesthesia with H Lowe.
  • Authored many journal articles and chapters in books, mainly on the above topics.
  • Prof. JF Viljoen died unexpectedly after surgery on 27-11-2010. RIP
