Professor and Head of the Department

The third incumbent of the Chair of Anaesthesia, succeeding Prof. G G Harrison in 1988.

Educated in Zimbabwe at the then University College of Rhodesia and Nyasaland Medical School (under the auspices of the University of Birmingham).

After specialising and practicing in Zimbabwe, immigrated to Johannesburg in South Africa, where he became the Professor at the Hillbrow Hospital of the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg.

Joined the Department in 1988 to take up the Professorship at UCT.

Spent a 6 month sabbatical at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, Australia, during 1995.

Claim to Fame

  • Magnesium therapy in anaesthesia, for which he has been invited to speak at numerous international conferences.
  • Anaesthesia for phaeochromocytoma surgery.
  • Has written numerous articles, book chapters, reviews etc. and is on the editorial board of anaesthesia journals.
  • Other interests include sport, especially hockey and cricket; and computers.
