Introduction
The Centre for Pain Management of the University of Cape Town was founded in the early nineteen eighties as a multidisciplinary pain clinic for the diagnosis and treatment of chronic pain conditions. The goals of the Centre are to educate patients about the unique condition of chronic pain and to emphasise the difference between acute and chronic pain.
Specialist physicians who have received special training in the field of chronic pain management staff the centre.
We stress return to normal function and a life free from continuing surgery and medications as opposed to the elusive cure, which in most circumstances, does not exist.
We are a multidisciplinary clinic consisting of medical doctors, physiotherapists, social workers and psychologists.
We do not attempt to produce a pain free life, as this is not possible in most cases.
We concentrate on dealing with stress, without the use of mind numbing drugs, and return to a normal lifestyle within the pain experience.
We put the patients in charge of their lives and not the health care system, which becomes more expensive each year.
We provide cost effective and multidisciplinary pain management and treat chronic pain as a total body experience and not as a symptom.
