One of only a few dedicated children's hospitals in the Southern hemisphere and the only one on the African continent.
The hospital was built as a memorial to the fallen soldiers of World War II, and was commenced in 1953 with the aid of public subscription.
The anaesthesia staff consists of 2 fulltime senior consultants, 1 rotating senior consultant, 3 rotating consultants and 6 rotating registrars.
An ICU anaesthesia registrar rotates through the new amalgamated multi-discipline Paediatric Intensive Care Unit.
Anaesthesia is provided for all major disciplines to children up to the age of 13.
Areas of special interest include cardiac surgery (incl. some heart transplants), liver transplants, the separation of conjoined twins and there is a busy burns unit.
