Welcome to our Home Page

The Department is located in the main teaching hospital of the University, Groote Schuur Hospital on the slopes of TableMountain, just beyond the centre of the city of Cape Town, capital of the Western Cape Province, Republic of South Africa.

Anaesthesia services are provided to the teaching hospitals affiliated to the Faculty of Health Sciences of the University, and these include the

  • Groote Schuur Hospital, Observatory; the main teaching hospital
  • New Somerset Hospital, Green Point;
  • Mowbray Maternity Hospital, Mowbray;
  • Valkenberg Psychiatric Hospital, Observatory;
  • 2 Military Hospital, Wynberg; (2 registrars)
  • Maitland Cottage Hospital, Newlands; (1 session for paediatric orthopaedics).
  • Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital, Rondebosch;
  • The Anaesthesia Department at Groote Schuur Hospital is the major teaching facility and provides a wide range of mainly tertiary services including all major surgical disciplines. The department provided anaesthesia for the world's first heart transplant and continues to have a strong interest in cardiac anaesthesia.

    Red Cross Hospital is the only dedicated children's hospital on the African continent.
    Paediatric anaesthesia is provided for all major disciplines to children up to the age of 13, with special interests in cardiac surgery, liver transplants and the separation of conjoined twins. There is a busy burns unit and a multi-discipline Paediatric Intensive Care Unit.

    The Departments of Anaesthesia and Critical Care (multi-disciplinary) jointly manage / staff / support the following ICU's

  • Respiratory Intensive Care Unit, dealing with non-cardiac medical-, surgical- and respiratory- patients.
  • Surgical Intensive Care Unit
  • Cardiac Surgery Intensive Care Unit
  • Multi-discipline Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at the Red Cross Children's Hospital
  • The Centre for Pain Management manages patients with chronic pain and an acute pain service is available for postoperative patients. The Centre is multi-disciplinary, with specialist and allied health professional support.

    The Nagin Parbhoo Museum is a small, but interesting, display of anaesthesia equipment and related items dating back to the 1800's.

  • 21-01-2009Dr. Nagin Parbhoo, Honorary member of the Department, passed away peacefully after a long illness.
    Nagin will be remembered for procuring and establishing the impressive collection of historical anaesthesia equipment that is now known as the "Nagin Parbhoo Museum of Anaesthesia".
    The department convey their condolences to his daughters and family - RIP

  • 31-12-2008Dr. Tony Butt has retired. Tony was the principal specialist in charge of anaesthesia services at the Red Cross Children's Hospital.

  • 01-12-2008Assoc. Prof. Rob Dyer has been appointed to the Second Chair of Anaesthesia at UCT, succeeding Prof. Adrian (Bosie) Bösenberg - Congratulations!

  • 21-08-2008Assoc. Prof. Tom Ruttmann passed away unexpectedly after emergency surgery for a recurrent tumour.
    Tom will be remembered for his dedication in improving working conditions for state doctors (as a SAMA councillor) and for his contributions to the department in research and the new building alterations.

  • 25-07-2008Janine de Wet passed away after bravely fighting her cancer. Our thoughts are with her family and fiancé.

  • 05-11-2007Ivan Joubert has been awarded UCT's highest honour for teaching, the Distinguished Teachers Award - Congratulations!
    He joins the ranks of Prof. M James who received the award in 1998

  • 09-10-2006Jenny Thomas has been awarded the title of Associate Professor, the first female professor in the UCT Department of Anaesthesia - Congratulations!

  • 29-02-2004Tessa Lopez, senior specialist at the Red Cross Children's Hospital, has retired.

  • 31-12-2003Prof. John Viljoen, first incumbent of the Second Chair of Anaesthesia has retired.

  • 22-09-2003Prof. Gaisford G Harrison, immediate-past Head of Department (1981 - 1987), passed away after a short illness, aged 76. - RIP

  • 31-12-2001Assoc. Prof. Joseph Ozinsky has retired.
    Ozzie initially retired in 1992, but couldn't stay away and came back the next day. He was an active member of the fulltime academic staff and still did regular cardiac lists.
    The department wishes Ozzie all the best and a more restful retirement this time round.

  • 03-03-2001Prof. Arthur B Bull, full-time Head of Department (1961, succeeding Dr. CS "Buck" Jones) and the first Professor of Anaesthesia at UCT (1965 - 1980), passed away, aged 80. - RIP
