Welcome to our Home Page

The Department is located in the main teaching hospital of the University, Groote Schuur Hospitalon the slopes of Table Mountain, just beyond the centre of the city of Cape Town, capital of the Western Cape Province, Republic of South Africa.

Anaesthesia services are provided to the teaching hospitals affiliated to the Faculty of Health Sciences of theUniversity, and these include the

  • Groote Schuur Hospital,Observatory; the main teaching hospital
  • New Somerset Hospital,Green Point;
  • Mowbray Maternity Hospital,Mowbray;
  • Valkenberg Psychiatric Hospital, Observatory;
  • 2 Military Hospital, Wynberg; (2 registrars)
  • Maitland Cottage Hospital, Newlands; (1 sessionfor paediatric orthopaedics).
  • Red Cross War MemorialChildren's Hospital, Rondebosch;

    • The Anaesthesia Department at Groote Schuur Hospitalis the major teaching facility and provides a wide range of mainlytertiary services including all major surgical disciplines. Thedepartment provided anaesthesia for the world's first heart transplantand continues to have a strong interest in cardiac anaesthesia.

    Red Cross Hospital is the only dedicated children'shospital on the African continent.
    Paediatric anaesthesia is provided for all major disciplines tochildren up to the age of 13, with special interests in cardiacsurgery, liver transplants and the separation of conjoined twins. Thereis a busy burns unit and a multi-discipline Paediatric Intensive CareUnit.

    The Departments of Anaesthesia and Critical Care(multi-disciplinary) jointly manage / staff / support the followingICU's

  • Respiratory Intensive CareUnit, dealing with non-cardiac medical-, surgical- andrespiratory- patients.
  • Surgical Intensive Care Unit
  • Cardiac Surgery Intensive Care Unit
  • Multi-discipline Paediatric Intensive Care Unitat the Red Cross Children's Hospital

    • The Centre for PainManagement manages patients with chronic pain and an acutepain service is available for postoperative patients. The Centre ismulti-disciplinary, with specialist and allied health professionalsupport.

    The Nagin Parbhoo Museum is asmall, but interesting, display of anaesthesia equipment and relateditems dating back to the 1800's.

  • 27-11-2010 Prof.John (Jack) Viljoen, first incumbent of the Second Chairof Anaesthesia at UCT (1993 - 2003) and a part-time member of theDepartment, passed away unexpectedly after surgery.
    Prof. Viljoen will be remembered for his contributions to cardiac- andthoracic- anaesthesia; both here at UCT and in the USA, where he spentmany years as a professor of Anesthesia at the University of SouthernCalifornia University Hospital, Los Angeles.
    The department convey their condolences to his wife and her family - RIP

  • 21-01-2009 Dr. Nagin Parbhoo,Honorary member of the Department, passed away peacefully after a longillness.
    Nagin will be remembered for procuring and establishing the impressivecollection of historical anaesthesia equipment that is now known as the"Nagin Parbhoo Museum of Anaesthesia".

  • 31-12-2008 Dr. Tony Butt hasretired. Tony was the principal specialist in charge of anaesthesiaservices at the Red Cross Children's Hospital.

  • 01-12-2008 Assoc. Prof. Rob Dyerhas been appointed to the Second Chair of Anaesthesia at UCT,succeeding Prof. Adrian (Bosie) Bösenberg - Congratulations!

  • 21-08-2008 Assoc. Prof. Tom Ruttmannpassed away unexpectedly after emergency surgery for a recurrenttumour.
    Tom will be remembered for his dedication in improving workingconditions for state doctors (as a SAMA councillor) and for hiscontributions to the department in research and the new buildingalterations.

  • 25-07-2008 Janine de Wet passed away after bravelyfighting her cancer. Our thoughts are with her family andfiancé.

  • 05-11-2007 Ivan Joubert has been awarded UCT's highesthonour for teaching, the Distinguished Teachers Award - Congratulations!
    He joins the ranks of Prof. M James who received the award in 1998

  • 09-10-2006 Jenny Thomas has been awarded the title ofAssociate Professor, the first female professor in the UCT Departmentof Anaesthesia - Congratulations!

  • 29-02-2004 Tessa Lopez, senior specialist at the RedCross Children's Hospital, has retired.

  • 22-09-2003 Prof.Gaisford G Harrison, immediate-past Head of Department(1981 - 1987), passed away after a short illness, aged 76. - RIP
    Obituary

  • 31-12-2001 Assoc. Prof. Joseph Ozinskyhas retired.
    Ozzie initially retired in 1992, but couldn't stay away and came backthe next day. He was an active member of the fulltime academic staffand still did regular cardiac lists.
    The department wishes Ozzie all the best and a more restful retirementthis time round.

  • 03-03-2001 Prof. Arthur B Bull,full-time Head of Department (1961, succeeding Dr. CS "Buck"Jones) and the first Professor of Anaesthesia at UCT (1965 -1980), passed away, aged 80. - RIP
