HEALTH SCIENCES LANGUAGE COURSES

OVERVIEW: Health Science Faculty

The African Languages Section falls under the Faculty of Humanities. The courses described here are courses specifically designed for Medical Students (MBChB) and Rehabilitation Sciences (Communication and Speech Disorders, Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy).
These courses are intended for students who have no prior knowledge of Xhosa. To accommodate students' varying levels of competence in Xhosa, the classes are divided into: Beginners, Intermediate, Advanced and Mother-Tongue. For each of the courses described in this section, the central aim is to equip students with basic communication skills that will enable them to communicate with patients/clients on topics related to their various vocations. The development of these communication skills is done through an integrated teaching approach of common communication themes in health and rehabilitation vocations. Grammar and culture are also integrated into the various communication themes. Some MBChB students also participate in language-oriented visits to local hospitals where they speak to native speakers of Xhosa.
