Moctar Doucouré is a Malian-born South African with an Engineering degree in exploration geophysics from the Petroleum Institute of Algiers and a PhD in geophysics from the University of Paris, France, followed by a postdoctoral Fellowship in Marine Geophysics at the University of Witwatersrand, South Africa. His professional experience includes research using a variety of potential field techniques such as gravity and magnetics, computer applications and science/maths teaching. Currently, his research projects span a range of academic and applied interests with emphasis on the African continent and its off-shore environment. A particular focus of his current research is the subsurface structure of Africa through characterisation of its crust and mantle.

Moctar has field experience throughout Africa as well as across the world's oceans. He is presently a Senior Research Officer in the Department of Geological Sciences, Univ of Cape Town; and he is the systems manager of the CIGCES (Centre for Graphical Computing of Earth Systems at UCT). His research focus in AEON will be the physical characterization and 3-D visualisation of Africa using gravity, magnetic, seismic and other remotely sensed data, with applications for resource targeting. Moctar is presently working on a project with De Beers African Exploration.
